Choeng Mon and Big Buddha Beach

Big Buddha Beach:

The 12-meter Big Buddha

Big Buddha, Samui's most famous landmark, is found on a very small island northeast of Bophut. It is connected to the main island by a small road. This golden statue is 12 meters tall and sits atop a wide staircase decorated with dragons. At the foot of the main building are many religious offering stands and several nice golden statues, including a reclining Buddha. You can donate some money by writing your name on a tile which will become part of the floor, or have your good fortune told by a 5-Baht coin machine: set the machine according to your birthday and you will be given a number; then look at the poster on the wall to find the corresponding number and your fortune (written in English also). Following Thai tradition, remove your shoes before climbing the stairs to see the wonderful view of Bophut Bay from the top. Like Bophut itself, this area remains a peaceful and relaxing interlude from the bustle of Chaweng.

Choeng Mon Beach:

The secluded bay of Choeng Mon

Further eastwards past the airport turnoff is Choeng Mon Beach. The area is only about 15 minutes north of Chaweng but because of its coastline, the beach remains quiet and the waters clean. A small but magnificent bay, it features wide sandy beaches with a rock formation on one side and a small island on the other.

There are several small coves and inslets to explore, some of which have been developed into self-contained, luxurious resorts like the Imperial Boathouse, with its stunning suites built into two-level, traditional Thai boats. The views from some of the villas on the hillside are absolutely breathtaking. The slope up and down the hill to the beach is a bit steep, but the hotel's silent electric shuttle transports guests upon request. No real villages can be found in this area, but there are some mini-marts, restaurants and tour counters along the road and Chaweng is only a few minutes south.

Where to stay in Choeng Mon:

The Imperial Boathouse

Nestled against the unspoiled beach of Choeng Mon on the northeast coast of Koh Samui, the Imperial Boat House Hotel comprises 34 authentic teakwood rice barges converted into international standard luxury suites, as well as eight low-rise accommodation wings. The hotel is just 4 Km from the island's international airport. Coral reefs are exposed at low tide, so the swimming is safe and sheltered. Go to Hotel Website

The White House, situated next to peaceful Choeng Mon Bay, on what is possibly the most romantic beach on the island, offers privacy and seclusion for complete relaxation. A perfect place to unwind and forget about the hectic pace of life back home, it combines the best of Thai hospitality with very nice accommodation. Go to Hotel Website
